Santigold Live At The Music Hall Of Williamsburg.

What an amazing show! Santi White has an special gift which was apparent the moment she stepped on stage last night in Brooklyn, NY. I've stopped gettin my hopes up when going out to see live shows as I always tend to be disappointed. This was not the case with the Santigold. The entire show was top notch...including the opening act Spank Rock.

I'd have to say my favorite thing about the show, besides Santi White, was her two fierce dancers. They really tore it up. Look for some live footage on youtube and you'll see. Oh and I forgot to mention that Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeah's made a brief appearance for the first song of the night. What a treat. Thank you Santi.

In July I had the pleasure of working with the talented Ryan Obermeyer in Austin, TX. It was such a fun collaborative experience. This photo was shot in 100°F+ temperatures just outside of Barton Springs Pool...The section of Zilker Metropolitan Park that is free and where it seems a lot of folks like to take their dogs.

It's amazing to me what Ryan is able to do in post production. He has a background in painting, sculpture, and drawing and he creates his digital images using all these modalities. . . .well at least approaching his photographs as if they are paintings or sculptures. I don't want to give it all away, but many elements in the finished photograph were added in post production.

I was a big fan of Ryan's work before we met and began our collaboration. So, needless to say, I was and still am super excited about working with Ryan. He has also created with/for many other artists/musicians that I admire...such as Imogen Heap and Milosh.

Omg...and just as we were done with the photo shoot...just after we got out of the water...a water moccasin appeared right where I had been standing! It was amazing. I can say that because we were safe and not in it's way. I took a video of it swimming along . . . so beautiful. Here it is:

I just found out that iTunes has listed the single as new and noteworthy on their alternative music home page! I am flipping out! This is a dream come true. I keep thinking I'm going to wake up any second and find that it's not listed there anymore...But it's true!

I just started on it last night....and I think it's coming along pretty well. I am excited. It kept me up till 4:30AM. Then I started back on it again this morning as soon as I woke. I'm supposed to be recording the vocals to my own song 'Fall Away' . . . reckon I needed a break...

For the month of August Christina Cone had a residency at the Living Room here in NYC. I was introduced to her via Matt Brandau (the kick ass bass player/friend I have been collaborating with). I've found myself singing her songs in my head when I wake. Very catchy, great melodies, beautiful voice, amazing band, and such wonderful people. I had to share this video of her from last week.

Beauty @ The Brooklyn Museum

I made my way over to the Brooklyn Museum last night to see New Villager perform. These trees were the first thing I saw as I came out of the subway. So beautiful. When walking underneath them it felt like I was in some sort of fantasy world. Plus the sky was overcast making the lighting spectacular.

New Villager played an awesome set just inside the museum. The sound in that space is really difficult. It is such a big open space with lots of bounce back. Not idea for a live show. But New Villager did a great job. Love their vocals.

EP Tracks Mastered...Now Onto Music Videos

I've decided to release a 5 song Album/EP which will happen sometime this summer!
Recently I had the last few tracks Mastered at the Kitchen Mastering in Carrboro, NC by Brent Lambert. I love working with Brent.

When I arrived for my session there Brent was working on the new Ani Difranco album. I found that pretty fascinating as Ani Difranco was the one that inspired me to pick up a guitar....back in the mid 90s. I became such a rabid fan and would travel all over to see her play. I'd wait in lines all day long to get the best spots for her shows. I would pre-order all her albums and yes I learned many of her songs on the guitar and played them out. During all of this I started writing my own songs . . .

So, I haven't really been listening to Ani for quite some time. But I actually thought the production on this new record Brent was mastering is pretty rad. I only heard a bit of two songs... If this were me back in the 90s I'd be going nuts...being able to hear some songs off the album before it's release.

Let me get back on track . . . So with the completion of the songs for my EP I'm now in the process of working on a music video for the first single. It's so exciting to put visuals to the song. The first single will be a song titled "In Your Arms". A song I wrote years ago. It has gone through so many different transformations. I am in love with where it ended up.

We are still in the brainstorming part of the music video process. I'm working with some great folks/friends Benjamen Relf and Sarah Romney. So I've been watching so many music videos for inspiration. Here is one I found last night:

This is a track I collaborated on with Crimson. He's a rap/hip-hop artist based out of Harlem, NY. He's got a great style. His love of comics is very evident in his musical endeavors.

For this track Crimson already had the song finished except for the hook. He sent me the track with a rough idea for the hook which he wanted me to sing. He gave me the freedom to take the hook and do what I wanted. It was fun to produce my vocals for this song. I didn't change any of the words he had written. I just gave them my flavor and then came up with some other parts to add to the rest of the song.

This is my first collaboration with a rap/hip-hop artist. It's something I want to do more of. Give it a listen and let me know what you think.

FYI it does contain some explicit language.

Robyn at Radio City Music Hall

I went and got some inspiration from Robyn last night. It was her biggest show to date at Radio City Music Hall. As KB said, "It was kinda like watching a triathlon." She was dancing the entire show, running up and down the stairs to the balconies, and singing. She was for real singing. Oh and she was wearing some big platform shoes. At one point she did fall down, but that didn't bring anything to a halt. She Just popped right back up and didn't miss a beat.

After playing in the snow at Central Park and recording vocoder parts in the studio. . . I had the urge to bake again. This time it was caramel corn. I can't believe this was my first time making it. It's so good. It reminds me of my childhood and it tastes kinda like Cracker Jacks. Now I'm just searching for the prize . . .

The recipe I used was from The Joy Of Veagan Baking. I used brown rice syrup in place of the corn syrup.

Another Snow Day Here In New York City!

We got 19 inches of snow here in NYC throughout the day yesterday and last night.

Seemed a good reason to do some baking.

This morning it was Vegan Chocolate Chip Scones!

The recipe was adapted a bit from Colleen Patrick-Goudreau's The Joy Of Vegan Baking.

The subtitle is The compassionate Cooks Traditional Treats and Sinful Sweets.

So true.

I love to make these scones into heart shapes....Just as they did at the Uptown Bakery in Oxford, Ohio where I spent many mornings studying for school.

Mmmmm....I think it's time to go and eat another...

In The Studio with My VP 330

Broke out my Roland Vocoder Plus VP 330 for a track currently titled Addicted (aka In Your Cup). I'm making a lot of progress and love what is happening. The VP 330 is one of the tools that really helps me in my songwriting/composing stages. It's going to make a big appearance on this track. I can't wait till it's ready for the world to hear.

Other songs I've used this on so far are: In Your Arms, Tried 2 Resist, and Wanting You.

I'm excited to be getting close to having something for y'all to hear. At the moment I am contemplating releasing my next album in two stages. Which would mean having something ready for a release in the spring/early summer 2011. . . . . I'll will post more here as soon as I am more clear with dates and what not.

It's already 10:30pm! Yikes. Time for dinner.

Missin' My Juno [Player Intro no. 1]

A few weeks ago I took my Juno 106 into the doctor to have a few things looked at/be repaired. I'm itchin' to get it back as I am in the midts of recording.

I figured this is a great time to start introducing some of the key players on my upcoming record.

I had wanted to acquire a Juno 106 for some time. I'd been searching on ebay and craigslist. One day, about 4 or 5 years ago, I was at the Haight Ashbury Music Center and in the back was a used Juno-106 on consignment. After over an hour of getting to know each other, I was set on taking this one home. Luckily I had just sold some gear and had the money to make that happen. I instantly feel in love with the bass sounds on this synth.

So, this is my Juno-106. So far I believe it's found its way onto 4 songs on my upcoming record. I can't wait to share what I'm working on. I can't wait to get my Juno back.

I originally recorded this cover of Captain & Tennille's hit song for an independent film. It's not a song that I would have thought to record myself. So when I started on working on it I wasn't thinking of putting it out as a single. After I was done recording/mixing, and Brent Lambert at the Kitchen Mastering put his touches on the track, I was really happy with what I came up with. It's a great song. Thanks to Toni Tennille.

Recording this song helped me realize, again, how much I love making music. It's what fueled me to start recording my third full-length album. So, I am really excited to share this recording. I hope that you will enjoy it. Please feel free to forward this email and share with friends.

New Music discovered at SXSW Part I

I can't help myself. I've got to blog about this band. Horse Feathers. I just purchased their album House With No Home. It's exactly what I needed. Exactly what I need right now. Right Now track no. 9, Different Gray normal, has me in tears. The Production on this album is exquisite. The vocals sometimes remind me of a male version of Beth Orton, but I can stand listing to it. (Sorry Beth, I do love your songs, but I have to take them in small doses). Plus the vocal production on this album is way drier than the vocals on a Beth Orton Record.

The instrumentation I am in love with. Acoustic guitar, cello, violins, banjo and mandolin at times, glockenspiel, upright bass, and . . . I could be missing some instruments. All I know is that I love STRINGS and I love vocal harmonies. Drums, hand drums, and electronic instruments are not present on the Record. They are not missed one bit. Tastefully they use a tambourine, cymbals, sticks, shakers, etc. The stringed instruments are very percussive, and the arrangements are giving me a lot of inspiration.

I came across this band while in Austin, TX for SXSW. A new friend of mine, Nick, and I were outside behind the club Barborella and on the other side of a wire fence Horse Feathers was playing. We were both diggin it and amazed at the drummer. He had such a shallow kick drum and he was playing with mallets. So awesome. We had to ask someone what the name of this band was.

What is also so amazing . . . just before this I was watching Nick along with Joshua and Geoff perform in Barborella in their band Star & Micey. I had met Nick and Joshua earlier at a demo listening session during the daytime panels in the conference center. These two had me totally committed to seeing their set just minutes after meeting them. They both are From Memphis, TN with such friendly and genuine southern spirits. Nick immediately was teaching me magic tricks. Then the next time I saw him in the hall he gave me a HIGH-FIVE. Now I love me a high five. So, needless to say I made it to their showcase and loved, loved, loved it. Around the base of the stage was . . . . [I'm gonna need to finish this later. OFF TO SXSW

The recording is coming along really well.

Time to take a break and head down to sunny Austin, TX for the annual South By South West (SXSW) Film, Interactive, and Music Festival. This will be my first trip to Austin and to the festival. I'm excited to find out what everyone is up to. Hopefully the experience will be inspiring and not too overwhelming.

I've got a release date set for my cover of Captain & Tennille's "DO THAT TO ME ONE MORE TIME". It will be available via your online stores such as iTunes and Amazon on April 27, 2010.

One week of dancing, NOW back to recording!

The performances at YBCA were so amazing. Thank You Ron Brown and all the beautiful dancers of Evidence, A Dance Company. Also, thanks to all the other bay area dancers. A dream come true, for sure.

Before buckling down and getting lost in the recording world, I thought I'd share a live recording of two songs recorded at Eddie's Attic in Decatur, GA. The recording is from the summer of 2000. It's of my songs "Hurricane" and "In Your Cup".

Evidence, A Dance Company, based in Brooklyn, NY fuses traditional African dance with contemporary choreography and spoken word to provide a unique view of the human experience. Founder and choreographer Ronald K. Brown’s newest work, Two-Year Old Gentlemen, is an homage to the traditions passed down from one generation of men to another. Inspired by the relationship between Brown’s young nephew and his grandfather (who passed away last year at age 80), Two-Year Old Gentlemen poses questions about male responsibility—to one’s community, to one’s family and to one’s self. Also featured is an original score composed and performed live by Guinean drummer Mamadouba Mohammed Camara. (Running Time: Act 1—34 min, Intermission, Act 2—55 min)

The program also features Ife/My Heart, Grace and Journey (a restaging of the Nick Cave collaboration). This is the part I'll be dancing in. It will be the same movement from the performance I did back in May, 2009 minus the Soundsuit! Here's a video from that performance:

I'm in the black Soundsuit with the rainbow wig. I'm so excited to be dancing with such a lovely group of dancers and an amazing choreographer! A dream come true.

I was hired to record a cover of "Do That To Me One More Time" for an Indy Film, "Hanging With Stu". Funny enough this is what got things rolling for me to record a new full length album. I'm really happy with how the recording turned out that I've decided to release it myself. Today I am having it Mastered at The Kitchen Mastering in Carrboro, North Carolina. This is where I've had all my projects Mastered by Brent Lambert. He's is awesome!

I'm currently working on a new album here in my apartment studio.

While messing around/trying to figure out how to record this tune I wrote quite some time ago, I decided to turn my camera on "video mode" and record myself. . . . and now I've decided to share it. . .

I made a recording of this song, "Wanting You", back in 2000 for a demo I put together. I love that recording, but I'm feeling the need to explore other versions.

So this is me rehearsing . . . And, Lisa G., this is for you.
